クバ民具(野甫島)
沖縄に自生するヤシ科の植物・クバ(ビロウ)は、古くから「神の宿る木」として神聖視されてきました。大きくしなやかな葉は神事に使われるほか、クバ笠やうちわ、ほうき、カゴなどの様々な民具を作る材料としても用いられました。
Kuba (Birou), a member of the palm family native to Okinawa, has long been considered sacred as a “tree of the gods.” Its large, flexible leaves were used for rituals and as a material for making various folk tools such as Kuba hats, fans, brooms, and baskets.
