ヤンバルクイナの日（国頭村）
世界中でやんばるの森にだけ生息している国の天然記念物・ヤンバルクイナは、日本で唯一の飛べない鳥です。外来種による捕食や交通事故の被害も多く、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。 国頭村にある「ヤンバルクイナ生態展示学習施設 クイナの森」では、なかなか見ることができないヤンバルクイナを、間近で観察することができます。目とくちばし、肢の鮮やかな赤色が特徴で、テコテコと歩くかわいらしい姿に心が癒されます。
Inhabiting only in the forests of Yanbaru, Okinawa Rail, the national natural monument, is the only flightless bird in Japan. It has been designated as an endangered species due to damages such as predation by non-native species and traffic accidents. At the “Yanbaru Kuina Ecological Exhibition and Learning Facility, Kuina Forest” in Kunigami Village, you can observe the Okinawa Rail, which is difficult to see from up close. Characterized by the bright red color of the eyes, beak, and limbs, its cute distinct walk will heal your heart.
